Resident Evil 6: Chris’ Campaign

Piers: What the hell were you thinking, pulling a kamikaze stunt like that!?
Chris: These are my men. You follow my lead or I’ll find someone who will.
Piers: Do you even hear yourself?
Chris: Fall in line, soldier.

Chris and Piers

Chris and Piers

Chris had the most unexpected and unforgettable story out of all campaign in Resident Evil 6. In Resident Evil 5, he was suffering from the loss of his long time partner Jill. Still, he was seen as strong, focused, and determined character who knows what is best. He succeeded in getting Jill back from Wesker and saved Sheva when Wesker tried to take her with him.

In Resident Evil 6, Chris is found alone at a bar in Eastern Europe, drowning himself in alcohol. My thought was after defeating Wesker he lost his purpose in life, and that would still have been pretty funny. But no. He was suffering from post-traumatic amnesia caused by a traumatic failed operation. He couldn’t remember who he was and all he had was the overwhelming guilt and pain.

At a bar in Eastern Europe.

At the bar Chris meets a man named Piers Nivans. Who has been searching for his former BSAA Alpha team captain and is determined to bring Chris back. They become partners in chapter 1 and after completing several missions(Drastic treatment for someone with memory loss. Ahem.) together, Chris’ memory slowly comes back at him and the scene follows chapter 2. And he starts remembers everything.

So he is going to man up and end the terrible behaviour? We are going to see the Chris Redfield we always knew and loved? You think so, wouldn’t you. In chapter 3, the guilt of his failed operation turns into rage and he drags the entire team for vengeance. And once again, Chris loses his team in Lanshiang, China. In the last chapter, Chris and Piers head to the oil field to rescue Jake and Sherry.

They discover the hidden underwater facility where they encounter Neo Umbrella’s ultimate bio weapon “Haos”. During the battle, Chris gets trapped and Piers loses his arm. Out of pure desperation to help Chris, Piers injects the enhanced C-virus to his wound. He managed to control himself as his right arm slowly starts to mutate and electrocute the enemy.

The final chapter is fast paced to the end. After they defeat Haos, half of his body is infected. Chris tries to convince Piers that they will both make it alive, but he refuses to go with Chris and pushes him to the escape pod. The ending shows that Chris still works in BSAA, so he chose Piers’ will over his retirement. So basically, the story is about the rise of the fallen Hero, which is does seem like a good story.

My way or the highway.

My way or the highway.

Buuuuut. The fact that Chris lost so many men multiple time over stupid traps, didn’t he have enough motivation to do whatever batshit insane stuff to protect his last member of the team?! I mean it was impossible to do anything in the exploding facility, but that one part kind of weakened the plot for me.

You can see that he still cares about his team, which shows when he tries to save Marco from Iluzija’s attack. Still his mind is not in the right place to take lead and loses Marco anyway. Capcom wouldn’t kill the staple characters but they really need to work with the story and let Chris do his job and save someone of his team! And isn’t that what they build up with the story, because it made more sense if Chris sacrificed himself to protect his last subordinate. And then they decide to cut off Piers.

Mission Impossible.

Mission Impossible.

I got spoiled on Tumblr so I was ready for the ending, but I don’t feel like it was the righteous way to end the story they build up. I think it would have been better if Chris sacrificed himself to save Piers. Capcom chickened out killing him so maybe just injury? So he didn’t have to die, he would retire because of the injury that saved the new captain. I know Chris should retire because he has done so much for the series. Give the guy some rest and let him pass the torch for christ sake!

Piers had some interesting character development and had potential as the one of the new leading character, just like Jake and Sherry. It kind of bugs me though, he actually vaporize in the air? What the hell? His death was never actually shown in the game either. Whatever their intention was I hope it was for the good.

Farewell Captain.

Farewell Captain.

The enhanced C-virus was created by strengthening the virus with Jake Muller’s blood. While normal C-virus requires the cocoon stage to regenerate, the enhanced C-virus skips that process and directly strengthen cells and mutate genes repeatedly. So, Piers injected a virus that made Derek Simmons ran over a fucking train and Carla Radames(We share the same name!) turn into a size of an entire aircraft ship. If you play as him his health bar heals automatically after injecting the virus.

I think there is always a chance for him to survive. Also, there were only three samples of the enhanced C-virus and I’m guessing they are all unique. So we aren’t really sure what it is capable of.

I’m not saying that he can survive from the the massive water pressure and explosion. It’s crazy idea. But let’s not forget, there were crazier shit that happened in this series. Just look at Wesker!!! He was swimming in fucking lava that Chris and Sheva had used 2 RPGs to make sure he was dead! Jill jumped off a cliff and came back with almost no injury thanks to Wesker’s crazy technology. Also, Ada died in Resident Evil 2 but comes back like nothing happened.

Who knows there is another evil corporation that collected his body and… Yeah, Resident Evil is about zombies, and is all bringing back dead people to life to complicate things further. LOL. He has an active fan-base and there is actually petition to bring back Piers Nivans in Resident Evil 7. If you like the idea you should sign up already!

It's self-explanatory.

It’s self-explanatory.

The action is straight forward run and gun but this single campaign is still far better than the experience I had with Resident Evil 5. I don’t like the new inventory system the game itself was okay. The characters are more developed than Resident Evil 5, except Chris’ character because he seemed different than the rest of the games he was in.

There are limited amount of ammo and I tend to be more trigger happy playing Chris’ campaign and tend to ran out a lot. Chris has his knife so that does help.
You fight infected and armed terrorists and most are already waiting in place for you. So its most action-oriented. and more tactics than the other campaign. You have tanks and choppers coming at you, blowing shit up.

Chris: What you said, about me hiding from the past.
Piers: Captain?
Chris: Can you catch up to her?
Piers: Won’t stop till I do.
